Historiography of the History of Abkhazia in the Second half of the Twentieth Century: A Brief Overview
Abstract
The paper aims to represent historiography of Abkhazian history of the second half of twentieth century
and provide critical analysis of the secondary literature on subject. The most of the available scholarly
contributions were published already in Soviet era. They were written under the strict censorship and because
of this reason their use without relevant criticism is unjustifiable. Many secondary sources in Georgian (among
them are books, articles, doctoral dissertations) came out in the second half of twentieth century. In addition,
the researches in European languages are available as well. The palpable part of them is in Russian and
in their majority, they falsify history. These publications belong to Oleg Bghashba, Stanislav Lakoba, Aslan
Avidzba, Vitaly Sharia, and others. The scientific researches on the history of Abkhazia by well-known modern
Georgian academic Zurab Papaskiri reflect the historical reality and through them the readers can get to the
heart of the matter.
