Summer Symposium Oriental Christian and Armenian Studies in Halle-Wittenberg (2025, June 19-20)

Abstract

The Mesrop Centre for Armenian Studies together with the Institute for Oriental Christianity and Byzantine Studies at MLU organized a Summer Symposium on July 19 and 20, 2025 − titled “Oriental Christian and Armenian Studies”. It focused on cultural, religious, social, political and historical connections between Europe and the Middle East. Georgian Armenian interdisciplinary papers were also welcomed. The scientific forum was opened and speakers were addressed by the symposium organizer, Professor Cornelia Horn, who created an favorable working environment for the exchange of ideas and bringing participants closer together. The speakers of the symposium were mainly from various educational and research institutions of Armenia, as well as from Brazil , Georgia, Italy, and the United States. The symposium also had online speakers. The two-day work was quite busy. The event included seven sections, which were divided into the following topics: Armenian History and Identity; Gender Studies and Women’s History; Armenian Art; Armenian Manuscript Culture from the Middle Ages; Christian Middle East; Georgian Manuscript Culture from the Middle Ages; Europe and Armenia. Each paper was followed by a lengthy debates which contributed to the fruitful work of the symposium.
